Abstract:In recent years, the number of pets in China has continued to increase, with the highest percentage of dogs and cats. Pets are increasingly regarded as family members, and their health and welfare are becoming a significant area of interest. The most common health issues observed in dogs and cats include gastrointestinal disorders, immune compromise, obesity, ageing, chronic kidney disease and other chronic metabolic issues. The gut health and flora balance of dogs and cats are significant factors that influence their physiological functions. In recent years, there has been notable advances in the application of probiotics in veterinary medicine, particularly in the treatment of canine and feline patients. Probiotics have been shown to exert a profound impact on the overall health and well-being of these animals by influencing the equilibrium of the intestinal flora and metabolic processes. The article primarily reviewed the mechanisms of the actions of probiotics and their application in dogs and cats. We tend to offer theoretical foundations for the development and application guidance of pet probiotic products and shed light on potential avenues for further research.
